Gurgaon: The regional transport authority has issued at least 100 challans to trucks for overloading during a drive this week, officials said. The authority collected Rs 20 lakh as fine from them in two days, they said.
According to sources, a team of RTA officials and police conducted a check in places like Sohna Road, Gawal Pahari, Manesar and Bilaspur for two days.
"Overloading of vehicles is an offence under Section 194 of Motor Vehicles Act as it can prove fatal in case of an accident. We got to know that many vehicles have been flouting weight limits lately and decided to launch this drive along with police," an RTA official said.
According to sources, there are increasing incidents of overloading due to presence of industrial units as well as the high pace of construction activity in the city.
"Overloading is harmful in case there is a collision as the impact increase with the weight of the vehicle. Besides, every road is constructed for a certain level of load and if that level is crossed, it would cause damage to the road," said Sanjeev Saxena, a road safety expert.
